YGO Zexal: Kaito Tenjo by Malindachan YGO Zexal: Kaito Tenjo by Malindachan
I didn't think I'd be able to have the whole thing done by Acen, but I somehow got it done!

Yugioh Zexal is a fun addition to the YGO series. The character designs are a bit strange at first, but they grow on you. If you do decide to sit down and watch it, I recommend getting through at least the first 13-14 episodes before making any judgments (and I'm not just being biased since that's when Kaito comes in XD).

Since this is the first photo of a new costume, here's the wall of construction notes:

The coat is modified from Simplicity 4962, though I was dumb and tailored the main part of the outfit before I added on the sleeves, which ended up making it really tight and awkward. I was able to save it since I had yet to do the purple part on the top, but it still has some areas that I wish I could fix without having to remake the whole thing. Overall I'm not too concerned with it though. The coat is made out of white denim with a red broadcloth lining. The purple areas are made from a piece of the same denim that I dyed with a mix of purple and blue dyes. All the yellow trim is bias tape and quilt binding. I also used a zipper and velcro in the front, and there's interfacing in the collar. The small yellow triangle accents are applique, and I used snaps for the detail on the little "belts" on my left tail.

The white finger-less glove was from, and I tailored a pair of pants from goodwill.

The boots are a pair of white go go boots that I got during Halloween. I made the front pieces out of the dyed denim and bias tape, added the zippers, and Velcro-ed them to the diamond shaped top pieces that I made out of craft foam (It's sealed with mod podge and painted with metallic gold paint). The craft foam parts slip on my legs before I put on the boots, and the rest of it is held on with elastic straps that stretch around the boots.

The undershirt was a white turtleneck I got on clearance at walmart, and since it was a cotton blend I was able to dye it grey. I cut off the sleeves so it'd be more comfortable and modified the collar so it'd have the proper shape and fit. I put a zipper in the back so it could still fit over my head. The red diamond is applique using heat n bond and a satin stitch.

The belt base is black vinyl with a bias tape edge. I hammered in snaps for the accents, and they're also used in the deck boxes to attach them. The deck boxes themselves are made from foam board covered in craft foam. They were then sealed with mod podge, painted, and then sealed again. They have Velcro to keep them closed. The "buckle" is also held on with snaps and made with the same materials as the boxes.

The duel disk was probably the most rushed out of everything; I made it 2 days before we left for Acen XD.
It's all foam board, craft foam, and hot glue. I sealed it all with mod podge and only painted the spots that I didn't have the right colors of craft foam for.

The wig:

I used blue Make up for ever Aqua cream for his Duel gazer mark and a Dolly + red lens. [link]

Perhaps one of the most difficult parts of this costume was getting all the references I needed to make it as accurate as possible. I had to re-watch several episodes multiple times to find every detail since character sheets for Kaito have not been released yet. It also doesn't help that because of the style of the show and importance of certain animated sequences, some details get distorted or end up inaccurate in certain shots.

Overall I'm pretty happy with it. :3

Another well done cosplay by Malinda-chan. No doubt you have a Photon deck for
optimal likeness. I find building the character's deck is a nice touch.

Nice Kaito cosplay! I watched Zexal as well to see what it was like too. When I first saw his hair it was a little weird for my taste... so was Yuma's!! I'll still continue to watch it cause I got hooked.

how do you even know if you should use cotton or polycotton or, in this case, white denim? O.oooooooooo

It varies. Usually I'm just looking for something with the right kind of weight and color. For Kaito, I knew the red lining might effect the appearance of the white fabric if I used something too lightweight, so denim was the best option. Though, in most cases I usually like to use Twill for jackets since it's 100% cotton (and therefore breathable) but not as hot as denim since it's not as thick (but it's also not too light. I usually avoid broadcloth as a main fabric for jackets because it's so thin, though it does make a good lining fabric). I also like Poplin and other bottomweight materials, but sometimes it really just comes down to which fabric is available in the color I want and the differences in prices.
